Who Was Jacob?

Short answer: Jacob was Abraham’s grandson. God renamed him Israel. His twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel, and their names show up in many of our Names lessons. (Genesis 35:10–12)

If you’ve read a Names lesson here and thought, “Wait, who are these people?”, this is for you.

The family tree, simply. God made a promise to Abraham: “In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:3) Abraham’s son was Isaac. Isaac had twin sons, Esau and Jacob. The promise passed to Jacob.

Not a hero. Jacob’s name sounds like “heel” and can mean “he cheats.” He tricked his brother and his father. (Genesis 27) He ran for his life. God kept the promise anyway. That’s grace showing up early in the story.

A wrestling match. One night Jacob wrestled with a man until dawn, and found out it was God. God gave him a new name: Israel. (Genesis 32:28) Jacob named the place Peniel, “face of God.” (Genesis 32:30)

The twelve sons. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. (Genesis 35:23–26) Their mothers named most of them out of real feelings: pain, hope, praise. That’s why each name tells a story.

Why it matters. From Judah’s line came King David, and later Jesus. (Matthew 1:1–3) The messy family is part of God’s plan to bless the world. Jesus once asked his followers, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15) The whole family story is leading up to that question.

Open your Bible: Read Genesis 32:22–32. Then come back and read the Names lessons below.
