Short answer: Prayer is talking to God. You don’t need special words. Jesus gave his friends a simple pattern, the Lord’s Prayer, and you can use it starting today. (Matthew 6:9–13)
Jesus’ own followers didn’t know how either. They asked, “Lord, teach us to pray.” (Luke 11:1) He didn’t laugh. He taught them.
No fancy words. Jesus said, “When you pray, do not heap up empty phrases.” (Matthew 6:7) God isn’t impressed by length. He’s your Father. Talk like it.
A simple pattern from Jesus:
- “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” Start with who God is. Thank him.
- “Your kingdom come, your will be done.” Ask for his way, not just yours.
- “Give us this day our daily bread.” Ask for what you need today. Small things count.
- “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Be honest about what you did wrong. Let go of grudges.
- “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Ask for help to stay close.
When you have no words. “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us.” (Romans 8:26) Even a sigh can be a prayer.
When it feels like nothing happens. Keep going. Jesus told a story about a widow who kept asking, “to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.” (Luke 18:1) Prayer isn’t a vending machine. It’s a relationship.
Try this today: Two minutes. One line of thanks. One honest need. One thing you’re sorry for. Amen.
Open your Bible: Read Psalm 13. David starts out upset and ends up trusting. That’s allowed.
