Morning and Evening – May 4, 2026

Morning

“Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods?” — Jeremiah 2:11

The essence of idolatry is the making of gods for ourselves. Man is an idol-making creature. He does not like to retain God in his knowledge, and so he makes gods for himself. He makes gods of gold and silver, of wood and stone. He makes gods of the sun and moon and stars. He makes gods of his own lusts and passions. He makes gods of his children and his wife and his husband. He makes gods of his money and his house and his land. He makes gods of his own wisdom and his own strength and his own righteousness.

But all these gods are no gods. They are the work of men’s hands. They have eyes, but they see not; they have ears, but they hear not; they have mouths, but they speak not. They cannot help those who trust in them. They cannot deliver in the day of trouble. They cannot save the soul from death.

The true God is the God who reveals himself in the Bible. He is the God who made the heavens and the earth. He is the God who sent his Son to die for sinners. He is the God who raises the dead and gives eternal life to those who believe in Jesus Christ.

Let us then cast away our idols and worship the true God. Let us trust in him alone for salvation. Let us serve him with all our heart and soul and strength.

— Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Morning & Evening

My Morning Reflection

In the light of this morning, Spurgeon’s words cut through the fog of modern idolatry. We live in an age where people bow to success, comfort, political saviors, and even religious experiences that center on self. But these are no gods. The Holy Spirit, who is actively at work today, opens blind eyes to see the vanity of our self-made idols and draws us to the living Christ—the only true God who became man to redeem us. Today, let us examine our hearts and cast down every idol. The God of the Bible is near, and He invites us to worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Morning Nectared Goad

Here’s the goad that stings but heals: The church is full of people who claim to love God but live as functional idolaters—addicted to approval, enslaved to entertainment, or obsessed with “Christian” subcultures that have replaced the simplicity of the gospel. These idols cannot deliver you in the day of trouble. The Spirit is raising up a remnant who will tear down the golden calves and return to the God who changes not. If you’re tired of the emptiness, the invitation is not to try harder—it’s to repent and believe the gospel afresh. Jesus is Lord. There is no other.

Evening

“I am the Lord, I change not.” — Malachi 3:6

The Lord is unchangeable in His nature, in His purposes, in His promises, and in His love. This is the ground of our confidence and the source of our comfort. The God who loved us from eternity will love us to eternity. The God who chose us before the foundation of the world will never cast us away. The God who redeemed us by the blood of His Son will never leave us nor forsake us. The God who has begun a good work in us will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.

Let us then trust in the Lord. Let us rest in His unchanging nature. Let us rejoice in His steadfast love. Let us serve Him with all our heart and soul and strength.

— Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Morning & Evening

My Evening Reflection

As the day closes, the promise of God’s immutability brings profound peace. In a world of constant change—shifting cultures, fleeting emotions, and uncertain futures—the Lord remains the same. The Holy Spirit applies this truth to our hearts, anchoring us in the finished work of Christ. Whatever the day held, the God who was with you this morning is the same God who watches over you tonight. Rest in His unchanging love.

Evening Nectared Goad

The goad for the evening: Too many live as if God changes with the news cycle or their feelings. But He does not. The Spirit is calling the church to a stability that the world cannot understand—a steadfast trust in the unchanging One. If your heart has wandered after idols today, the invitation is simple: return to the Lord who does not change. He is faithful even when we are not. The gospel is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

The Tie-In: Our Only Hope

From morning’s warning against idolatry to evening’s promise of God’s unchanging nature, the gospel thread is clear: There is one God and one Mediator, the man Christ Jesus. The Holy Spirit applies this truth powerfully today, calling sinners out of darkness into His marvelous light. If the Spirit has stirred your heart, don’t let it pass. Come to the One who alone is God and Savior. The cross is the end of all idols.

In a world that says “May the Fourth be with you,” we declare that our Only Hope is Jesus Christ. Not a force, not an idol, not a political savior—but the Lord who changes not, the Redeemer who lives, the King who reigns forever. The Puritans and Reformers knew this well; they fixed their eyes on the unchanging Christ amid a changing world. Today, let us do the same. Soli Deo Gloria.
