Day 4 – The Little Hole: Climbing Out of Our Self-Made Bunkers
Continuing gently, beloved, we’ve seen the audit, the shift, and the erosion—now let’s talk about that little hole we dig for ourselves. Building on yesterday’s reflection, we often crawl in with our comforts, calling it ‘living my truth’ or ‘protecting my peace.’ It’s a self-made bunker against the world’s demands, but it isolates us from real connection and care. The pull back inside is strong, yet Scripture calls us to consider others more important. There’s grace to climb out, one step at a time.
This ‘hole’ isn’t always obvious—it’s cozy, lined with our favorite distractions, affirmations, and boundaries. But over time, it deepens, making the outside world feel threatening. In Philippians 2:4, we’re reminded again: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” It’s a call to emerge, to prioritize connection over isolation. Jesus modeled this perfectly—He didn’t hide in a bunker; He stepped into the mess of humanity, even when it cost Him.
Consider how culture cheers this digging: ‘Put on your own oxygen mask first,’ we hear, which is wise for emergencies but not for everyday life. When it becomes a lifestyle, we miss the beauty of interdependence. Galatians 6:2 urges, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Bearing burdens means stepping out, sharing the load—not retreating. I’ve dug my own holes during stressful times, only to find them lonely. Climbing out starts with small acts: a call to a friend, a helping hand, a prayer for someone else’s peace.
Grace abounds here—God doesn’t demand perfection; He offers His hand to pull us up. As you notice your own ‘hole,’ be kind to yourself. Test the edges: What if today you reached out instead of retreating?
Finally, as we wrap this, remember there’s an invitation waiting beyond this bunker. Tomorrow, we’ll hear it clearly—the tender call to release the ‘me’ burden and step into real life. Until then, may grace light your way out.
This is Day 4 of a 5-day series. Tomorrow we hear the tender invitation waiting beyond the hole.
