10 Minutes with Calvin – Book 1.1.2: The Knowledge That Reveals Our Misery and God’s Mercy
10 Minutes with Calvin
For the next season we are going to do something simple but radical. We are going to sit with John Calvin himself—one short section at a time from his Institutes of the Christian Religion. No long lectures. No modern spin that softens the edge. Just Calvin’s own words, explained clearly in plain language a modern heart can feel in its bones.
This is 10 Minutes with Calvin. Ten minutes a day that might change how you see God, yourself, sin, grace, and the glory that is worth everything. If you’ve ever felt the old masters were too hard or too far away, this series is for you. We won’t water anything down. We won’t rush. We will simply let Calvin speak, and let the Holy Spirit do what He does.
Book 1.1.2 – The Twofold Knowledge (continued)
Calvin’s Words:
“For as a man cannot be a good judge of his own ability without first examining himself, so also he cannot know God without first turning his gaze upon himself… [full section on how the knowledge of God reveals our own poverty, nakedness, and the infinite riches of God’s grace].”
My Reflection
Calvin presses the point further in 1.1.2: the knowledge of God and of ourselves are so intimately joined that contemplating the majesty of God immediately exposes our own misery, ignorance, and utter dependence. It is not a comfortable knowledge. It strips away every pretense and drives us to the cross.
This is the kind of knowledge that changes everything. It kills pride and births true humility. It turns our eyes from self-reliance to the mercy of a gracious God who stoops to save.
One Thing to Carry with You Today
Take an honest look in the mirror of God’s holiness. Let it reveal your need, then run to the mercy that meets you there. This twofold knowledge is the foundation of all true wisdom and worship.
Nectared Goad: When was the last time the knowledge of God’s glory exposed the truth of your own heart—and drove you back to His mercy with fresh dependence? Are you willing to linger in that mirror today?
Tomorrow we will continue with how this knowledge shapes our understanding of sin and redemption.
This series will take us through the Institutes one section at a time. Short. Clear. Faithful. No fluff. No compromise. Welcome to 10 Minutes with Calvin.
