March 6, 2026 – Morning & Evening with Spurgeon: Ye Must Be Born Again
Morning Devotional “Ye must be born again.” — John 3:7
Regeneration is a subject which lies at the very basis of salvation, and we should be very diligent to take heed that we really are “born again,” for there are many who fancy they are, who are not. Be assured that the name of a Christian is not the nature of a Christian; and that being born in a Christian land, and being recognized as professing the Christian religion is of no avail whatever, unless there be something more added to it — the being “born again.”
To wash and dress a corpse is a far different thing from making it alive: man can do the one, God alone can do the other. If you have no more than the outward form of religion, you have not the slightest evidence that you are a Christian.
Evening Devotional “Before destruction the heart of man is haughty.” — Proverbs 18:12
It is an old and common saying, that “coming events cast their shadows before them;” the wise man teaches us that a haughty heart is the prophetic prelude of evil. Pride is as surely the sign of destruction as the change of mercury in the weather-glass is the sign of rain; and when the heart is proud it is full of destruction, and ready to fall.
God will not suffer a haughty spirit to go unpunished; He will bring it low, and make it know its own weakness.
Pastor’s Reflection:
This morning Spurgeon stopped me cold. “Ye must be born again” isn’t a suggestion — it’s the very foundation. No amount of church attendance or family heritage can substitute for the new birth that only the Spirit of God can give. And then the evening warns us: pride always walks ahead of destruction.
In a world full of self-made religion, this pair reminds us that true Christianity begins with humility at the mercy seat and a heart made new by sovereign grace.
At NewGrapes Ministries we believe truth like this shouldn’t stay in old books. Share how this spoke to you in the comments.
