Milk Is Not an Insult

On a farm, milk is not a joke. It is how a living thing starts.

A calf does not apologize for needing it. A mother does not sneer while she gives it. Nobody in the barn calls milk “baby talk” and then wonders why the young one is thin. Milk is a gift. It is also work. It is the first food, and it is honest food.

Peter knew that. “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation.” (1 Peter 2:2)

Long for it. Not tolerate it. Not graduate past it so you can look grown. Long. Hunger is not a personality. Hunger is a sign of life. A dead thing does not ask for milk. A stuffed thing does not either. It only manages the next snack.

I used to think milk was what you left behind so people would take you seriously. I wanted the thick books first. I wanted to sound like I had already chewed. The Spirit had to teach me otherwise. People need milk longer than they admit. I did. I still do, some mornings, when the simple gospel is the only thing that will go down.

Pure spiritual milk. Not sugared. Not a talk that never quite names Jesus. The milk is Christ given in the Word, received with a newborn’s lack of pride. You do not earn the bottle. You open your mouth.

Hebrews can sound sharp here. “You need milk, not solid food.” (Hebrews 5:12) I do not want that verse as a slap. The writer is not ashamed of milk. He is grieved that some have stopped. They have had time, and they still will not chew. Milk is not the problem. Stopping is. Solid food is for later, for those whose senses have been trained. (Hebrews 5:14) Later is not a sneer at today.

If you are new, milk is for you. If you have been in church since you were small and you still need the simple thing said plainly, milk is for you too. That is not an insult. That is mercy. I will not hurry you past the door so the house looks advanced. I will not pretend a website is your church. Stay where you are planted. Love the people who love you. And come hungry.

The gift is this: you may start again without shame. “Newborn infants.” Peter could have picked a more dignified picture. He did not. The Lord is not embarrassed to feed you. Be less embarrassed to be fed.

I am not building a ladder of levels so you can climb off milk and look down. Milk at the door. Solid food on the table. Meat for those who stay. Same Christ. Same Word. Same hunger. The difference is how much you can chew without lying about your appetite.

If you are hungry for the simple thing, take it. If you have been pretending you are past it, take it anyway. Long for the pure milk. Grow up into salvation. That growth does not begin with a swagger. It begins with a mouth that is still open.
