Short answer: You don’t have to switch your brain off to ask this. The world around you points to a Maker. Your own sense of right and wrong points to a Judge. And God has not stayed silent. He has spoken most clearly in Jesus. (Hebrews 1:1–2)
It’s a fair question. The Bible doesn’t get offended by it. Plenty of people in its pages asked it too.
Look up. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1) A painting points to a painter. A sky full of order and beauty points somewhere too. Paul says God’s power and nature “have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world.” (Romans 1:20)
Look in. You know some things are really wrong, not just unpopular. Where does that come from? Paul says the law is “written on their hearts.” (Romans 2:15) That inner sense is a clue.
Look at Jesus. This is the biggest one. God did not just leave clues. He came. “No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” (John 1:18) Jesus said, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9) And he backed it up by rising from the dead, in front of witnesses. (1 Corinthians 15:6)
What about doubt? A father once told Jesus, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24) Jesus didn’t send him away. He helped. You can be honest with God too.
Try this. God says, “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13) Read about Jesus for yourself. Ask God, out loud if you want, to show you if he’s there.
Open your Bible: Read John 20:24–31. Thomas doubted too. Watch what Jesus does with it.
